The undergraduate agricultural education program is a collaborative partnership between the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) and the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). Graduates of the program are prepared for formal and non-formal teaching positions. Students are prepared to meet Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements in agricultural education for grades 5-12 and for teacher coordinator of work-based learning. It includes a broad study of courses in food, agriculture, and natural resources. Professional courses are focused on standards of effective teaching and content pedagogy. Students gain relevant knowledge through integrated field experience. In addition to teaching in the formal classroom, graduates are prepared for a wide range of employment opportunities in training, non-formal teaching and learning, sales, management and public relations in the food, agriculture, and natural resource industry. Students may graduate from this program with a minimum 2.00 overall GPA, but a minimum 2.50 overall GPA is required for recommendation for Minnesota teaching licensure.

All students in baccalaureate degree programs are required to complete general University and college requirements including writing and liberal education courses. Required courses for the major, minor or certificate in which a student receives a D grade (with or without plus or minus) do not count toward the major, minor or certificate (including transfer courses).

Designed for students who are not majors in a life science program, but who wish to acquire a better understanding of biological concepts especially as they relate to their lives. We examine current issues related to food, food production and the environment which provide the context to investigate fundamental concepts of biology including productivity, energy, genetic change in populations, and environmental responses to human activity. We use a problem-based learning approach to explore three contemporary issues of great importance: risks and benefits of GMOs, farming and food, and the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. This course is designed for individuals having no prior training with animals or nutrition but have interest in caring for and understanding the contemporary importance of companion animals. Emphasis will be on nutrition of healthy animals and the various factors that play a role in feeding an animal adequately. These factors include animal behavior, environmental conditions, food type, and availability. The course will emphasize basic principles of nutrition. The target audience of this course is all undergraduate students interested in nutrition and care of companion animals. The course will focus on companion animals, but not exclusively dogs and cats.
