College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
At the core of the communication discipline is a concern for the relationship between symbolic action (speaking, writing, etc.) and social change. The BA in communication emphasizes the breadth and diversity of the communication field, with an integrated focus that spans social scientific and cultural/historical methodologies. Students develop conceptual and research competence in the areas of interpersonal communication, mass media, and rhetorical theory and practice.
Honors Requirements: Candidates must be communication majors with a 3.30 GPA in all communication courses and 3.30 U of MN GPA overall. Students write an honors-quality paper sponsored by a communication faculty member and approved by two additional communication faculty. Candidates apply before the end of the first four weeks of their senior year. Contact the department head or academic adviser for more information.

Program Requirements
1) A second field of study (either a minor, another major or dual degree).
2) Study abroad is encouraged for all students and the department makes every effort to facilitate such experiences.
First Term Requirement (1 cr)
Transfer students with 24 or more credits and current UMD students who change colleges to CLA are exempt from this requirement. New first-year students with 24 or more PSEO credits may request to be waived from this requirement.

Eight elective courses totaling at least 24 credits are required. One course is required from each distributed electives area. An additional 15 credits must be completed. Within these 15 credits, 9 credits must be COMM 3xxx level or above. A maximum of 3 credits from any combination of the following courses may apply to the major: COMM 3310, 4394, 4397, 4399, and 5391. COMM 3300-TA does not apply to the major but does apply to the overall degree.
