The Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota is committed to an inclusive study of gender and sexuality, informed by differences such as class, ethnicity, citizenship, disability, race, and age. Our intellectual goals for students include learning from and engaging with interdisciplinary scholarship on gender, women, and sexuality; understanding the intersections among race, gender, class, and sexuality, both in the United States and globally; developing critical and analytical skills by bringing together the methods of a range of disciplines; enhancing research skills and creative talents and developing new ideas and theories about gender and sexuality that challenge assumptions and contribute to social change.

General Requirements
All students in baccalaureate degree programs are required to complete general University and college requirements including writing and liberal education courses. For more information about University-wide requirements, see the liberal education requirements. Required courses for the major, minor or certificate in which a student receives a D grade (with or without plus or minus) do not count toward the major, minor or certificate (including transfer courses).
Program Requirements
Students are required to complete 4 semester(s) of any second language. with a grade of C-, or better, or S, or demonstrate proficiency in the language(s) as defined by the department or college.
CLA BA degrees require 18 upper-division (3xxx-level or higher) credits outside the major designator. These credits must be taken in designators different from the major designator and cannot include courses that are cross-listed with the major designator. The major designator for the Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies BA is GWSS. At least 15 upper-division credits in the major must be taken at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Students may earn a BA or a minor in gender, women and sexuality studies, but not both. Students may not combine a gender, woman and sexuality studies BA or minor with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender minor. All incoming CLA freshmen must complete the First-Year Experience course sequence. All students must complete a capstone in at least one CLA major. The requirements for double majors completing the capstone in a different CLA major will be clearly stated. Students must also complete all major requirements in both majors to allow the additional capstone to be waived. Students completing an additional degree must complete the Capstone in each degree area.

Capstone
In the capstone, students conduct independent research and writing in conjunction with a 3xxx-, 4xxx-, or 5xxx-level GWSS class. Students who double major within CLA and choose to complete the capstone requirement in their other major may waive the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies BA capstone, but they do need to replace the 6 credits with undergraduate GWSS coursework to reach the minimum credits required for the major.

What does the ?social life? of Coronavirus and Covid-19 look like? Do pandemics have politics? Are diseases biomedical or socio-political phenomena? Why are African-Americans disproportionately affected by Covid-19 and HIV in the US? Why did the US become a hotspot for the rapid transmission of Coronavirus and what does this reveal about the market-based healthcare system? What are the global stories, struggles, failures, and successes of the Covid-19 pandemic? What will a post-pandemic world look like? In this class, you will answer these questions as they learn about the intersections of science and technology with the politics of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability.

Transgender Health is an online, 3 credit, 8-week course, in which we will learn how the social categories of sex and gender transform our understanding of health and medicine. This course offers feminist perspectives on transgender health care and considers how health care and social services professionals serve (or fail to serve) the diverse needs of transgender patients and clients. Students will engage with literature from feminist and queer studies, the media, public health, medicine, social work, and legal studies.
GWSS 3215 - Bodies That Matter: Feminist Approaches to Disability Studies (DSJ)

The COVID-19 pandemic has made questions of disability and ableism central and visible for all of us as never before. Dis/ability is not a physical or mental defect but a form of social meaning mapped to certain bodies in larger systems of power and privilege. Feminist approaches explore dis/ability as a vector of oppression intersecting and constituted through race, class, gender, sexuality, and citizenship. The course examines ideologies of ableism and the material realities of such oppression, and works toward imagining and constructing a more just and equitable society. As health care is differentially distributed or limited for people who are sickened by COVID-19, we see that systems of social and economic power determine the life chances of those who claim, or are claimed by disability. Meanwhile, people with disabilities have developed many daily life strategies that can be models for everyone coping with the pandemic.

In this course, we'll examine this history to better understand our contemporary present. We'll analyze constructions of disability and sexuality as they are interwoven with gender, class, race, and citizenship. We will ask: What might it mean to desire disability? Is there a disability sexual culture? Do disabled people queer sex, or does sexuality queer disability? What is the relationship between GLBTQ and disability rights and liberation movements? The GWSS 4108 is the capstone of a GWSS major?s education in GWSS and an opportunity for them to produce a thorough and significant research project. While the final version of the project can take several different forms, each one requires the student to do a deep examination of your topic. GWSS 4108 is a 3-credit class that allows students the opportunity to be surrounded by other GWSS majors as you work through their projects collaboratively. This class allows students to keep organized and on track with their projects, be a part of a writing and research community, and have their work read and critiqued by others so their end results are nuanced, polished pieces of writing and research.

Why are African-Americans disproportionately affected by Covid-19 and HIV in the US? Why did the US become a hotspot for the rapid transmission of Coronavirus and what does this reveal about the market-based healthcare system? What are the global stories, struggles, failures, and successes of the Covid-19 pandemic? What will a post-pandemic world look like? In this class, you will answer these questions as they learn about the intersections of science and technology with the politics of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability.
