The interdisciplinary minor in international education is for students enrolled in any M.A. or doctoral program who wish to enter careers in research, consulting, administration, and teaching in an international context. The minor offers a coordinated set of courses from the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Policy and Administration; Educational Psychology; Human Resource Education; the School of Kinesiology; and the Institute of Child Development.

Prerequisites for Admission
Special Application Requirements:
Admission to the international education minor is contingent upon prior admission to the Graduate School and to an M.A., M.S., M.S.W., S.C., Ph.D., or Ed.D. program at the University of Minnesota. Program Requirements
Use of 4xxx courses toward program requirements is permitted under certain conditions with adviser approval.
Each program is developed in consultation with the student, the student's adviser, major director of graduate studies, and director of graduate studies for international education. Requirements include OLPD 5103 - Comparative Education and OLPD 5124 - Critical Issues in International Education (one for master's, both for doctoral); research OLPD 5121 (for doctoral students only); and area-specific coursework. Electives from the University may be added with the adviser's consent and director of graduate studies approval.

In this course, you will learn about: Theories of child development and how they relate to approaches to instruction; Behaviorist, cognitive, and social cognitive learning theories; Approaches to instruction and assessment (teacher-centered vs. student-centered vs. assessment-centered); and Issues related to assessment and measuring student learning (validity, reliability, interpretation, etc.) by participating in assessment design (traditional, performance, formative) and interpretation.

Introduction to individual and organizational career development theory and practice. Examines critical issues in work patterns, work values, and workplaces in a changing global society, with implications for career planning, development, and transitions, emphasizing personal and organizational change. This course addresses counseling implications for diverse individuals and families. Students will understand the impact of worldview and other factors such as ethnicity, culture, religious preference, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disabilities in community, higher education, and school settings. Students will examine their own worldviews as it relates to the topics discussed. Advocacy and social justice practices for working with diverse populations will also be addressed.

This course hopes to support graduate students in exploring the empirical literature focused on the experiences of diverse families, broadly defined, in the United States. Further, this course aims to improve students? ability to interpret research findings and the methodological considerations in light of research on diverse families and application of a broader set of theories. Course content may include, but is not limited to: pathways to parenthood, identity-based socialization practices, culturally informed family dynamics and relationships, demographic characteristics of diverse families, or identity development among diverse youth.
