The minor in public health is available only to students enrolled in master's and doctoral programs outside of the School of Public Health. Students enrolled in master's and doctoral programs within the School of Public Health are not eligible for this minor because the requirements of the public health minor are part of their major field of study.

Prerequisites for Admission
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.00.
Other requirements to be completed before admission:
Admission to the public health graduate minor is contingent upon prior admission to a master's or doctoral degree-granting program at the University of Minnesota. Students enrolled in graduate programs within the School of Public Health are not eligible for this minor. Students should first consult with their major program adviser about the advisability of a minor in public health. They will then need to contact the director of graduate studies, Kristin Anderson, PhD, MPH (ander116@umn.edu or 612-624-1818) or plan level coordinator, Carol Francis (franc004@umn.edu or 612-624-6952), for minor information.

The master’s minor coursework must be selected from graduate courses offered by the School of Public Health in each of the following disciplines: biostatistics, epidemiology, and environmental health. The minimum GPA for coursework applied to the Public Health minor is 3.0.

Doctoral
The doctoral minor coursework must be selected from graduate courses offered by the School of Public Health in each of the following disciplines: biostatistics, epidemiology, and environmental health. If students have already taken comparable graduate-level courses in these disciplines, other public health courses, with the public health advisor and director of graduate studies, can be used to complete the minor. The minimum GPA for coursework applied to the Public Health minor is 3.0.

Develop ability to read/interpret statistical results in primary literature. Minimal calculation. No formal training in any statistical programming software. Biostatistical Literacy will cover the fundamental concepts of study design, descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, odds ratios, relative risks, adjusted models in multiple linear, logistic and Poisson regression, and survival analysis. The focus will be when to use a given method and how to interpret the results, not the actual computation or computer programming to obtain results from raw data. prereq: MPH or certificate student or environmental health or instr consent
PUBH 6450 - Biostatistics I

This course will cover the fundamental concepts of exploratory data analysis and statistical inference for univariate and bivariate data, including: ? study design and sampling methods, ? descriptive and graphical summaries, ? random variables and their distributions, ? interval estimation, ? hypothesis testing, ? relevant nonparametric methods, ? simple regression/correlation, and ? introduction to multiple regression. There will be a focus on analyzing data using statistical programming software and on communicating the results in short reports. Health science examples from the research literature will be used throughout the course. prereq: [College-level algebra, health sciences grad student] or instr consent
