General Information section of
this
website for requirements that apply to all major fields.
We are a collaborative department with highly-ranked programs in both basic and applied areas of psychology and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The doctoral program offers tracks in clinical science and psychopathology research; cognitive and brain sciences; counseling psychology; industrial-organizational psychology; personality, individual differences, and behavior genetics; quantitative/psychometric methods; and social psychology. Students apply directly to one of these seven areas of specialization depending on their individual interests and goals.
The requirements vary across areas but all include coursework, mentored research, training in developing and conducting research, analyzing and interpreting data, and interpreting existing theory and research in psychology (i.e., scholarship). Our goal is to produce accomplished scholars and researchers for a variety of occupational roles.
Accreditation
This program is accredited by APA (Counseling and CSPR only); PCSAS (CSPR only)
Program Delivery
Prerequisites for Admission
Other requirements to be completed before admission:
An undergraduate major in psychology is preferred, but not required. Competitive applicants often have a strong background in psychology or related fields with at least one course in statistics, psychological measurement, or research methods. We view favorably applicants who are well prepared to participate in research, which is the main emphasis of our program.
Special Application Requirements:
Applications are accepted for fall admission only; the deadline is December 1. Applicants identify their proposed track at the time of application. Application components include: a department application, two course abstract uploads, a personal statement, a diversity statement, a CV or resume, three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's scholarship and research potential, and, for some tracks, GRE scores (see GRE Requirements by Area of Specialization on department website). Applications are submitted electronically through the online application system.
International applicants must submit score(s) from one of the following tests:
The preferred English language test is Test of English as Foreign Language.

Students may not complete the program with more than one sub-plan.
Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research
Effective Fall 2023, all CSPR (APCS) students without the master's upon matriculation must complete the University’s Psychology MA degree. Both the Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (capstone) are acceptable, provided students complete the “mailbox ready” manuscript milestone by the end of their second year in the program. Students with the masters in psychology or a related discipline upon matriculation are relieved of the masters requirement, but must still complete a "mailbox ready" manuscript.
All CSPR students must complete a predoctoral internship prior to graduation (typically in the final year of the program).
