The program in second language studies offers a course of study leading to an M.A. The program emphasizes research and practice in language analysis, second language acquisition, teaching methodology, and language assessment. Students are expected to do independent and creative work in one or two of these areas with the aim of developing a more complete understanding of the issues facing professionals in the field of teaching ESL today. Degree holders are qualified to teach ESL to adults at the college or university level. The ESL minor consists of three required master's-level ESL courses: SLS 5401, 5402, and 5721, for a total of 11 credits.

Prerequisites for Admission
Special Application Requirements:
LING 5001 or equivalent is a prerequisite for the three courses for the ESL Minor.

Use of 4xxx courses towards program requirements is not permitted.
For a graduate minor in ESL, students must take SLS 5721, 5401, and 5402, for a total of 11 credits.
