The Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) degree in music education is for students planning to teach classroom instrumental or vocal music. This degree with vocal emphasis prepares students to teach K-12 Vocal and Classroom Music. This degree with an instrumental emphasis prepares students to teach K-12 Instrumental and Classroom Music. The program prepares and inspires students to acquire effective teaching skills and to develop a commitment to teaching and to music education. It prepares students to be advocates for music in the K-12 setting. Graduates with this degree may be recommended for Minnesota Teacher Licensure. Department honors requirements: Candidates, nominated by music department faculty, receive honors for distinguished achievement in musical performance, composition, or exceptional ability and accomplishment as a music educator.

Students must pass performance audition, diagnostic exams in theory/aural/keyboard skills, & interview with music faculty. Students who receive provisional acceptance must later pass a review including recommendations from major instructors with successful completion of an applied jury. Students entering the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) K-12 licensure programs are bound by the policies in effect at the time of application; admission is based on criteria established by the UMD Department of Education consistent with the policies established by the MN Professional Educator Licensing & Standards Board (PELSB).

1) Seek out advising each term with assigned advisor throughout college career to ensure you are on track for program completion. 2) Students are expected to make satisfactory progress each term, including grades of C- or better in all courses required in the major and successfully achieve all standards aligned with assignments in each course. 3) Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. A GPA of 2.5 is required for acceptance into the STEP program. 4) Demonstrate acceptable professional performance, including dispositions and teaching skills, in field placement; candidate proficiency is assessed throughout the teacher preparation courses by University faculty, University supervisors, and the cooperating teachers in all field experiences. The field experience assessment forms include knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are aligned to institutional and standards for all field experiences. 5) Abide by the MN Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) and UMD Department of Education Code of Ethics. 6) Students are required to obtain an approved background check every two years prior to placement in practicum, volunteering, or student teaching in schools and agencies. Proof of complete background check is required prior to any experience in public school and agency settings. Students are required to keep a printed copy of the background check to provide to the school or agency, if necessary. 7) Students are required to have professional liability insurance, before being placed in practicum, volunteering, or student teaching in schools and agencies. Insurance is purchased online through the Education Minnesota Student Membership annually while students are completing field placement. A paper copy of the insurance MUST be provided to the UMD Department of Education when signing the placement contract each term. 8) Adhere to university policies regarding attendance; and in addition to the above expectations, students must abide by all university policies. See your advisor for details. 9) Before block coursework students must complete all Music Ed coursework, UMD Lib Ed Program, Adv Writing and all other requirements outlined at: z.umn.edu/stepapplication. APPLICATION DEADLINE: The STEP application is due the 6th Friday of the term prior to starting Block 2. Application for admission can be only completed spring terms for fall term entry into Block 2. 10) Students are required to complete a program clearance process as part of the student teaching application to review their degree status with their advisor and UMD Department of Education and the College of Human Service Professions Accreditation Office. Students must have grades of C- or better in all required courses, and meet the required GPA in the major to be eligible for student teaching. 11) Recommendation for licensure is based on successful completion of all program-related courses; demonstration of satisfactory outcomes required by the program; acceptable performance in field experiences, including student teaching (including final student teaching assessments); submission of the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), completion of UMD Department of Education graduate exit survey, and successful completion of all tests required by PELSB.
