The MA in Asian Studies program is a terminal degree that provides students from a wide range of backgrounds with language proficiency in one Asian or Middle Eastern language, and the relevant knowledge of histories, literatures, and cultures to pursue a wide range of careers, including: government; nonprofit institutions and social work; law, journalism and business; K-12 and community college education; library and archival work; and translation and interpretation. The degree also prepares students interested in pursuing a doctorate in related graduate programs, including the University’s Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures and Media PhD.

Prerequisites for Admission
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.00.
Other requirements to be completed before admission:
Plan C admissions requires at least the ACTFL Advanced Low level of language ability in the language of concentration, evaluated through a placement test administered by the relevant Director of Language Instruction.
International applicants must submit score(s) from one of the following tests:

Program Requirements
Plan A: Plan A requires 20 major credits, 0 credits outside the major, and 10 thesis credits. The final exam is written and oral.
Plan B: Plan B requires 30 major credits and 0 credits outside the major. The final exam is written.
Plan C: Plan C requires 30 major credits and 0 credits outside the major. There is no final exam.
This program may be completed with a minor.
Use of 4xxx courses toward program requirements is permitted under certain conditions with adviser approval.

A minimum GPA of 3.30 is required for students to remain in good standing.
At least 1 semesters must be completed before filing a Degree Program Form.
Plan A language requirement: Students must fulfill language requirement by completing or demonstrating linguistic proficiency comparable to ARAB 5102, CHN 4008, HNDI 4006, URDU 4006, JPN 4006, or KOR 4006. Integrated BA Asian Languages and Literatures / MA Asian Studies
The integrated BA/MA is available to eligible University undergraduates pursuing the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies BA degree. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.30 and be within 30 credits of completing the BA to be eligible, with preference given to those with a demonstrated high proficiency in their language of concentration. Applications to the BA/MA are submitted spring semester of the junior year, and admission is contingent on a formal admissions process. Students admitted to the BA/MA must maintain timely degree progress to ensure completion of the BA no later than the end of their fourth (senior) year. Up to 10 graduate-level credits (5xxx courses) completed in the fourth (senior) year can be applied to the MA degree, with the remaining MA degree requirements completed during the fifth year of study. No credits can be double counted to meet both BA and MA credit requirements.

AMES 8001 - Critical Approaches to Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

This course aims to provide critical and theoretical foundations for incoming graduate students in Asian Literatures, Cultures, and Media program, while also addressing broader questions that would be of interest to students in other departments in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Our project will be to generate discussion about the theoretical and political complexities of studying Asia and the Middle East from a cross-cultural and transnational perspective, taking account of several inter-related questions at the heart of the work of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Beginning with Edward Said?s critique of orientalism as our point of departure, we will take up a range of questions revolving around debates over historiography (e.g., capitalism and the formations of race and gender, nationalism and imperialism, etc.) and the relationship between cultural studies and political-economy (e.g., the political unconscious, national allegory, translation and translingual practice, ethnographic gaze, etc.) with a particular attention to the complications posed by taking ?Asia? as the object of intellectual inquiry in any such analysis. Our discussions will consider key problematics in cultural theory, the uses of such theory in the Asian context and some of the issues thereby raised, and critical interventions by scholars of Asia.

This course is intended for students who have already completed four semesters of study in Urdu or have an equivalent Hindi-Urdu proficiency. The course builds on the skills acquired in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the first semester of Advanced Urdu instruction (URDU 3031/4005) and provides a more advanced foundation in Urdu. The course aims for the students to acquire an advanced-level proficiency in Urdu by developing language functions such as narration, description, and comparison. Students will be introduced to different genres and styles of spoken and written Urdu as well as grammatical details that facilitate accuracy and fluency. The students are expected to read and write coherent Urdu paragraphs and further develop and hone their conversational skills. We will also review and continue the study of Urdu grammar.
