This course will address issues of improvisation, composition, and creativity of critical importance to musicians and music educators, with a strong emphasis on music-theoretical and socio-cultural modes of understanding the meanings and functions of music. Students will gain experience with the creative practices characteristic of a variety of Western and non-Western forms, including those of jazz and Minnesota American Indian music. The workshop format of the class will challenge students to improvise and compose works, present and perform them to their peers, provide and receive constructive feedback, engage and respond to this feedback with reference to clearly articulated statements of artistic intent, and revise the works accordingly.
