Duluth Campus
Biology B.A.Biology
Swenson College of Science and Engineering
Biology has long been recognized as basic to environment, agriculture, and medicine. Because the topics studied by biologists range from sub-cellular particles to global environmental concerns, and because of the variety of living organisms and the various ways of studying them, many specialties have developed. The BA program provides majors with the necessary background to pursue careers in the diverse areas of life science, including health care professions, and the many careers that provide the interface between science and society.
There are three sub-plans: Human Biology, Life Science, and Medical Laboratory Sciences. The Human Biology sub-plan is designed for students interested in human health-related fields. The Life Science sub-plan is designed for students who would like to integrate their interests in biology with other fields outside the sciences, such as policy, education, or the arts. The Medical Laboratory Sciences sub-plan is implemented in coordination with a Medical Laboratory Science Certificate program on the UMTC campus. Upon completion students will receive both a BA in biology and an MLS certificate in less time than it would take to complete each program independently.
The Department of Biology encourages students to develop as active scholars and to participate in undergraduate research. The degree involves faculty from multiple departments in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, and our students and faculty regularly collaborate with researchers in the UM Medical School and Pharmacy School.

Admission Requirements

Office of Admissions
website.
General Requirements
Program Requirements
1. A second field of study (e.g. minor, major, degree) may be required for this major.
a. The Human Biology sub-plan requires a second field of study from another area of study outside the Department of Biology or the Natural History minor within the Department of Biology.
b. The Life Science sub-plan requires a second field of study from a non-SCSE program.
c. The Medical Laboratory Science sub-plan does not require a minor or second major because the subplan includes 14 MLSP credits that count toward the University of Minnesota Twin Cities certificate program in Medical Laboratory Science.
2. This schedule presupposes placement into BIOL 1011; CHEM 1153 and CHEM 1154, which require the prerequisites of high school chemistry and a math ACT of 24 or higher, appropriate Accuplacer score, or college algebra; and MATH 1250 or MATH 1160, which require the prerequisite of a math ACT of 24 or higher, appropriate Accuplacer score, or college algebra.
Learning In Community (1 cr)
The Learning in Community requirement will be waived for transfer students with at least 30 credits taken post high school and for UMD students who started in a UMD program where this was not required. First-year students who have completed 30 PSEO credits may request a waiver to the student’s primary college.

Human Biology
Required credits to graduate with this degree: 120
Required credits within the major: 70 -71
The Bachelor of Arts in Biology with Human Biology sub-plan is designed to provide the breadth and depth of knowledge required for students entering human health care professions including nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, and the diverse array of health care technician programs. The core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics provide a strong foundation for more specialized upper division coursework. Students will complete their degree with upper division electives from the life, physical, and social sciences and humanities to focus their degree toward their professional goals. A maximum of 2 cr BIOL 3993, a maximum of 4 cr BIOL 3994 & a maximum of 1 cr BIOL 3996 may be applied to the degree. BIOL 2102, 2202 & 2802 carry a lab component. BIOL 3011 can count if WRIT 3150 or 3180 has been completed or if there has been a previous completion of BIOL 3011.

Medical Laboratory Science
Required credits to graduate with this degree: 120
Required credits within the major: 81
The Biology Bachelor of Arts with Medical Laboratory Science subplan prepares students careers in health care including nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, and a diverse array of health care technician programs. Within this subplan, students will take targeted coursework to prepare for their application to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Certificate program. Upon acceptance to the certificate program, students will complete two MLSP courses in spring and/or summer plus one fall semester of MLSP coursework on the Twin Cities campus that will also meet the Biology BA degree requirements. Students who graduate with their Biology BA prior to completing all MLS coursework will finish their remaining MLS Certificate coursework and clinicals as Twin Cities certificate students (enrollment solely in a certificate program does not qualify a student for federal financial aid; students are encouraged to work with the MLS Certificate program contacts regarding scholarship opportunities that may be available). Students who complete the full certificate will be prepared to perform complex testing in laboratories requiring advanced technical skills and problem-solving abilites that are in demand in hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices as well as in research, forensic, and refernece laboratories.
Cell Biology (3 cr)
