Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a field that studies the structure, property, processing, and application of materials. The MSE minor provides students with the fundamentals of materials science and engineering and introduces them to a material focused approach to problem solving. Completion of the MSE minor requires a minimum of 45 credit hours, which include 36 hours of required courses and at least 9 hours of elective courses

Measurement of material properties including: yield strength, tensile strength, stiffness, hardness, toughness, and hardenability. Traditional methods of processing materials including: punching, plastic injection molding, thermoforming, sand casting, sheet metal forming, extrusion, welding, polymer matrix composites vacuum bagging. Heat treatment and metallographic study of metals. Estimation of the effects processing techniques have on material properties using both analytical and empirical techniques. Use of Design of Experiments approach for estimation of process control factor effects and modeling of process quality characteristics.
