Focus on the development of educational policies for American Indian people through the 20th Century; examines shifts in educational policy the impact of such policy and how American Indians reacted to the nature of education programs and sought to reform schools to better meet tribal and community needs.Features of American Indian education policy development, relationship and role of research and science, public perceptions of American Indians, Indian activism, and tribal and community involvement in educational policy will be discussed and analyzed.A number of policy themes will be explored, language and culture, self- determination and control, expansion of education opportunities and the well being of American Indian children and youth through the statutory and programmatic iterations of these themes. The focus will be on cultural pluralism and the importance of education today that support American Indian/Alaska Native self- determination, identity and cultural integrity. prereq: Minimum 60 credits, no grad credit; credit will not be granted if already received for EDUC 5081
