Learning Abroad Minor

The minor helps students integrate their study abroad with supporting University coursework from a variety of disciplines. Since some of the required courses must be taken before departure, careful advance planning is essential. A detailed explanation of requirements and guidance concerning course selection is available from the academic advisers at the Learning Abroad Center in 230 Heller Hall. Minor Requirements
Students are required to complete 4 semester(s) of a language appropriate to their country of study. with a grade of C-, or better, or S, or demonstrate proficiency in the language(s) as defined by the department or college.
The four required semesters of a second language do not factor into the overall length of credits in the minor. The Learning Abroad minor requires a minimum 8-week study abroad experience worth at least 6 credits. Two years of a second language appropriate to your study abroad experience is also required. To declare the minor, call 612-626-9000 to make an appointment with the minor adviser. A final clearance appointment is required once all degree requirements have been completed.
Intercultural Communication
Complete COMM 3451W prior to departing for your study abroad program, and complete COMM 3452W upon returning from your study abroad program. (1) COMM 5451 and OLPD 3330, or (2) MGMT 3900, or (3) SLS 3501 can be substituted for COMM 3451, contingent on prior adviser approval.

Study abroad for a minimum of eight weeks. Take at least six credits of coursework.

This course teaches students how to create culturally aware messages in business settings. Students will learn to recognize the cultural dimensions and communication patterns of various social identities that form at the intersection of nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, and gender. Through intercultural development assessments, case studies, simulations, business writing assignments, and discussions, students will: 1) reflect on their own cultural identities and worldview, 2) recognize how different cultural values can impact business success, and 3) engage in debates about the complex ethical, political, and social issues that arise from cross-cultural exchange.

Theory and research on cultural differences in values, norms, behaviors, and perceptions that affect communication across cultures internationally and domestically.
